What Does It Mean to be a Gamer?

In the 1970’s table top RPG (role playing games) hit the nation. In the 1980’s video games gained a foothold in our homes. These two groups of gamers have merged in the current millennia and created a gamer culture that to outsiders seems to revolve around the roll of dice, the glow of the computer screen and copious amounts of caffeine.

Gamers come from all walks of life. There are closet gamers who hide their hobbies from most of their friends. There are proud gamers who wear gaming paraphernalia and campout at game stores for a midnight release. Additionally, contrary to common opinion, there’s a large growing population of girl gamers even for FPS (first person shooter) games. Gamers range from the young to the old, but the bulk of the population is made up of teens and those in their early twenties.

Parents of gamers may feel excluded from their child’s life more so than the parents of other teens due to the special vocabulary of the gaming culture. “Pwning noobs” is not something that will get your child arrested. “Fragging” won’t get them pregnant. “Pwn” and “frag” are not misspelled garbage. They’re real words for gamers, which basically mean kicking butt. Forcing most gamers to use something other than a computer with an AMD processor or outdated technology may cause tension in the family. Additionally, spending hours in front of a computer trying to down a raid boss won’t ruin their life as long as their grades are up. If a parent wants to reach out to their gamer child, there are several things they can do. Buy the best internet connection available in your area and purchase a high quality gaming router and computer. This will encourage your teen to host LAN parties and gaming parties where their friends can be under your roof and watchful eye while they PVP, PVE, and roll dice till their hearts’ content. The only down side to hosting such get-togethers is the increased cost of snacks and energy drinks.

Gamers rally around new releases, new technology, a love of caffeine, and conventions. They’ve been here for decades and will remain as long as there are games.
